Australian pork is highly efficient in comparison with international production with respect to water usage. Australian water use is lower than that presented for pork and many other livestock species in international literature.
We are well below world average water use for pork production. World average = 4856l/kg, Australian deep litter systems = 2753l/kg and Australian conventional systems=3020l/kg.
The location of piggeries often restricts the availability of fresh water. The industry has adapted by being highly efficient in minimising water use, having well designed drinkers, recycling treated effluent for cleaning sheds and for crop/pasture irrigation.
