Overview

Our scholarships help support higher education students establish and shape their research careers and get experience within the Australian pork industry.

To be able to immerse themselves within the pork industry and research communities, we also fund our supported students to attend the:  

  • Australasian Pig Science Association

  • Pan Pacific Pork Expo

  • Victorian Pig Fair

Undergraduate industry scholarship

If you’re an undergraduate student, you may be able to apply for an undergraduate industry scholarship. The scholarship recognises high calibre undergraduate students and fosters their interest in pursuing a career in the pork industry.   

 This scholarship can help you:  

  • Secure a funded placement at a piggery for 2 weeks   

  • Scholarships are provided up to AU$500 per week of piggery placement

  • A final report on the student’s experiences is submitted to APL  

  • Gain a greater understanding of the pork industry with hands on experience

Ron Pollard Undergraduate Scholarship

The Ron Pollard Undergraduate Scholarship award was established in 2009 by APL’s Research and Innovation Division, in memory of the late Ron Pollard.   

This award honours Ron’s commitment to mentoring young people in the pork industry. Ron was a respected NSW pork producer. He was the former president of the Pork Council of Australia, and was instrumental in the restructure of a number of national industry associations which resulted in the formation of APL.  

The Ron Pollard Undergraduate Scholarship award:  

  • Is automatically eligible for recipients of the undergraduate industry scholarship  

  • Provides the recipient with a further $1,500, in addition to their undergraduate scholarship

The scholarship is eligible for students with a high calibre:

  • Academic record  

  • Report on their performance during their industry placement from the producer  

  • Final report

Undergraduate honours scholarship

APL supports undergraduate honours scholarships within an area of research aligned to the APL strategic plan 2020-2025. Undergraduate scholarships:   

  • Are only for one year   

  • Have a maximum of $5,000 stipend and $5,000 operating costs  

If you’re interested in this scholarship, we recommend you speak to the relevant person at your university or institution who has research interests in the pork industry.

Post-graduate scholarship

APL supports post-graduate awards including Masters and PhD programs. These are 2 and 3 years in duration, respectively.   
  
The awards facilitate research within research areas of importance to the Australian pork industry.   
  
Preference is given to applicants who:  

  • Are looking to study within key areas of research that are linked to the Strategic Plan 2020-2025  

  • Are conducting research in an existing APL project  

  • Have a high calibre academic record with references  

  • Have experience within the pork industry and/or undergraduate experience in research  

If you’re interested in this scholarship, we recommend you:   

  • Speak to the relevant person at your university or institution who has research interests in the pork industry

  • Apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)  

If successful in obtaining an APA or other stipend scholarship, students can apply for an APL top-up scholarship so that the their total stipend is equal to that of the current APA scholarship value for the year in which they first received the scholarship, plus $5,000 p.a.

Students will also receive $7,500 p.a. to cover costs related to their professional development — i.e. costs for training/upskilling, attendance at conferences and workshops, or publication costs.
