Sydney Royal School Commercial Pig Competition

In April each year, APL supports the Sydney Royal School Commercial Pig Competition. Schools source and rear pigs from producers in their local area ready for judging on hoof and then on hook at the show. The competition delivers hands-on learning, supported by curriculum-linked resources, husbandry guides and direct contact with pig experts.

In 2019, teachers of participating schools considered the competition a great success, and some have passed on their feedback:

“We liked the project component of the competition, which made the students have to evaluate and assess the pigs as well as preparing them for competition. We found all of the breeders in the shed were fantastic at sharing the knowledge with the students and KHS kids had an absolute ball cleaning every pig in the shed!” – Jill, from Karabar

“Students learnt first-hand the impact of feed rations on growth (balance of energy and protein) and the impact of stress on weight gain. Also students LOVE pigs, they are amazed at how intelligent and personable they are.” – Briony, from Coleambally

“This was the 3rd year that we have been involved with the competition. The students are still developing a keen interest of the challenges of successfully growing out the pigs for competition. Once again the students from Kempsey High School benefited from the experience that the competition brought, and they hope to be involved next year.” – Shannon, from Kempsey

“It was an industry that previously our students and myself had not had experience with. It looked like a great opportunity to develop knowledge and experience. Really thankful for the opportunity and support and hope we have the opportunity to be involved again.” – Nadine, from McCarthy
