Improved diagnosis of respiratory diseases in pigs

Project summary

Previous work has identified a new species of respiratory disease - Glaesserella australis - in pigs. It presents similarly to APP, and it is therefore expected that it has been mis-identified as APP during slaughter-checks in the past, and may even be a contributing factor to the belief that some APP vaccines are not effective.

The ability to better diagnose G.australis will ensure accurate diagnosis, better monitoring of this - a new disease - and ensures vaccines are not being used to try to prevent diseases they will not work for.

Value for producers:

  • Improved diagnostics of respiratory issues and therefore more targeted treatment/prevention
