Australian Pork Limited (APL)’s position is consistent – we care about our pigs, and as an industry we share the community’s concern for the welfare of our animals. That’s why we continue to recommend global best-practice drawing on CO2 stunning – the most humane and effective method of managing pig welfare during processing. We’ve also been consistent in calling for processors to exceed the standards set out in the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Livestock Processing Establishments.

The majority of Australian abattoirs that process pork have moved to invest in improved infrastructure and implement best practices like group-wise stunning.

APL does not condone any behaviour that shows animal cruelty in poor handling or through the incorrect use of infrastructure. We fully support the regulators in investigating any individual or business that has done the wrong thing.

APL will work with all stakeholders to develop resources that will enhance training and competency of abattoir staff to ensure all pre-stun animal handling processes are operated at the highest standards.

Our industry provides livelihoods and sustenance to many Australians, and we are always willing to learn and improve our operations.

That’s why we adhere to the global best practice of CO2 stunning – currently, the most humane and effective method of managing pig welfare during processing.

Australian Pork Limited (APL) is driving continuous improvement across the industry, and we work with all stakeholders to ensure the safety of our people and the humane processing of our pigs.

Our industry provides livelihoods and sustenance to many Australians, and we are always willing to learn and improve our operations.

APL takes animal welfare very seriously, and we are committed to discussing our industry openly and transparently, but recent activist activity has not been about starting a conversation.

The entire Australian pork industry takes the welfare of our animals through their whole life very seriously and we are seeking to receive and review the full footage.

Australian Pork Limited (APL) is the peak national representative body for Australian pork farmers. Our farmers strive for world-leading best practices when it comes to animal welfare.

Commercial pig farming in Australia is a highly focussed industry, guided by both federal and state legislation.

The industry is further underpinned by continual investment into research and development that supports and promotes pig welfare.

APL will continue to work to support the industry to ensure animals receive the highest level of care. The industry also ensures that methods used are backed by peer-reviewed, scientific research into animal welfare ensuring the best outcomes for our animals.
