Pork producers giving hope to Sydney’s most vulnerable this Christmas

Celebrating its 27th year, NSW Pork Producers, in partnership with Australian Pork Limited and NSW Farmers, will donate quality Australian pork to The Salvation Army Streetlevel Mission – ensuring vulnerable Sydneysiders can enjoy a traditional Christmas lunch.

A donation of ham and pork from the Australian pork industry will be shared with those that need it the most, on Tuesday December 22 at the Salvation Army’s Streetlevel mission in Surry Hills.

Ean Pollard, a grains and pork producer from Young in NSW and Chair of the NSW Farmers Pork Committee, is proud to continue the tradition his father, Ron Pollard, started 27 years ago with the Salvation Army.

“It’s wonderful to be part of such a long-lasting tradition that my father started all those years ago. I feel proud to see his legacy continue all the while helping those in need at Christmas time,” said Ean.

CEO of Australian Pork Limited, Margo Andrae, says the donation is an opportunity to support and give hope to those vulnerable at Christmas time.

“Christmas can be a challenging time for those doing it tough, and this year will be extra difficult given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are proud to see NSW Pork Producers continue the tradition of bringing some Christmas cheer to marginalised Sydney communities by donating amazing Australian pork,” said Margo.

This Christmas, 38 per cent of Australians are more stressed about their finances compared to last year, making it an increasingly anxious time for vulnerable families.

Mitch Evans, Mission Leader of The Salvation Army said the initiative is a reflection of the local community’s generosity.

“Most of us take it for granted, but there are families all over Australia who go without a traditional Christmas lunch. We are thankful for the generosity of NSW Pork Producers, Australian Pork Limited and NSW Farmers for supporting our most vulnerable communities during the Festive Season,” said Mitch Evans.
