Australian Bacon Awards and Bacon Week

The aroma of sizzling bacon filled the air as Australian Bacon Week captured tastebuds and imagination last month [June].

The week celebrated 100 per cent Australian bacon, but also drew attention to the competition Aussie bacon faces from imported product.

While delicious dishes were created, one of the highlights of the week was the Australian Bacon Awards.

Now in their fifth year, the awards identify and showcase the best true blue bacon.

The three judges – Fleischmeister Horst Schurger, chef Simon Bestley and Australian Pork’s Mitch Edwards – assessed the 135 entries on a range of criteria including appearance, aroma and taste.

The quality of this year’s entries impressed judges and also revealed consistent quality, with the overall Best Australian Bacon and Best Nationally Available winners both going back-back.

For the second consecutive year, the judges named Pialligo Estate Smokehouse the makers of Australia’s Best Artisan Bacon. This year it was their dry cured and smoked shortcut rashers which impressed the judges.

Bertocchi Smallgoods also became a back-to-back winner, taking home the Best Nationally Available Bacon title for the Bertocchi Brothers’ Long Rindless Hickory Smoked Bacon, available in the chilled aisle of Coles stores.

Consumers are being encouraged to get behind Australian Bacon Week, adding Aussie bacon to their menus and purchasing product that has the PorkMark or words “Product of Australia”.
