The Australian pork industry takes food safety very seriously. In addition to regulatory requirements the vast majority of Australian pork is produced under the Australian Pork Industry Quality Assurance Program (APIQ√®) which requires pig producers to be audited against comprehensive food safety standards in their on farm practices. The industry also has a comprehensive livestock traceability system in place to enable a rapid response to a food safety emergency, and we participate in the National Residue Survey which monitors chemical residue levels in pork.
Food Safety Regulation
Australian’s are very lucky to live in a country where food safety is so well regulated from farm to plate.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) develops food standards to cover the food industry in Australia and New Zealand. They develop the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code which is regulated in each state. FSANZ is also responsible for labelling for both packaged and unpackaged food, including specific mandatory warnings or advisory labels, and country of origin labelling.
APL has been a long standing advocate for clearer food labelling in attempt to ensure consumers receive accurate and clear information about the pork products they buy.
National Residue Survey
The National Residue Survey (NRS) is a random sampling program run by the Australian Government, which monitors chemical residue levels in agricultural commodities to ensure they are kept at a safe level. Residues tested for in pork include agricultural chemicals (e.g. pesticides and antibiotics), environmental contaminants (e.g. heavy metals) and other chemicals that have trade concern (e.g. Dioxin). The cost of this monitoring is largely industry-funded through levies.
The Australian pork industry performs well in the NRS. NRS results for pork have not gone below 99.85 per cent overall compliance with relevant Australian Standards for the past 10 years.
