Alternative farrowing systems – a holistic review focusing on piglets, pigs and people

Project Goal

This project aims to provide Australian pig producers with practical information from producers in both Denmark and Australia who have implemented non-confinement and reduced-confinement farrowing systems, focusing on management considerations rather than animal welfare assessment or transition recommendations.

Project summary

The review brings together global insights on alternative farrowing systems and highlights features most relevant to Australian conditions. Rather than comparing specific pen designs, it focuses on outlining general principles and possible staff and management adaptations to existing systems.

The objective of this work is to provide the industry with up-to-date global information on alternative farrowing systems and to identify practical management factors that may support successful implementation. To achieve this, the report includes a comprehensive literature review and five detailed case studies. These cover commercially available systems and their adaptations, examples of systems currently in use, considerations for stockperson skills and safety, and the impacts on hygiene, husbandry, animal welfare, and productivity. The review also examines the use and management of enrichment materials within these systems.

Value for producers:

  • Direct observations and insights from farm owners, managers and farrowing house staff on the practicalities of non-confinement and reduced-confinement farrowing pens
  • Information for Australian producers on key production areas if considering the transition from crate to loose lactation operations

Please note: APL continues to support traditional farrowing systems while recognising and supporting research into alternative systems, balancing the health and welfare of sow, piglets and the people caring for them. Research is part of our commitment to demonstrating science-led animal welfare which underpins our commitment to continual improvement in the care of our pigs and our people.
